Don't you just hate it when you go somewhere interesting and all of the best stuff is hidden behind "Off Limits"/"Closed" signs?
The trail to the base of Tower falls washed away and was deemed unsafe in 198? [no connection to the 1988 fires], and (supposedly) has been under re-construction and renovation ever since. (I see no sign of any effort made to reconstruct the trail 20 years later, besides some new plants on the hills) In the mean time, the lower trail is closed.
That is a terrible, terrible shame, because THIS is the view you get from the bottom.
This is my absolute favorite photo I have taken so far on my Yellowstone adventure. I've seen larger, wilder and more spectacular sights ... but I just love how this picture came together. It looks almost mystical ... and being a view that more well-behaved guests never get to see makes it a little more exiting.
I am taking the photo FROM the closed off area in this picture ... the wood fence you see is the end of the closed section of the trail. I'm at least 100 yards beyond the "No Entry ... Trail closed" sign at this point (technically illegally trespassing).
I took some pictures from the end of the trail as well, closer to the waterfall, but those didn't turn out as well. The Camera could not see the whole waterfall and the pool below together from that close without turning the camera sideways, and that shot just didn't look as nice without the rest of the surrounding scenery, which is why I posted THIS photo instead of the closer shots.
